The history of our golf club

Founded in 1936 as Macquarie Golf Club

Founded in 1936 as Macquarie Golf Club, Sugar Valley Golf Club was the first golf club established in the Lake Macquarie region. Originally developed as a nine-hole course in West Wallsend, the club quickly gained popularity, with membership growing from 35 to 100 in just a few months.

The club built its first clubhouse

In 1939, the club built its first clubhouse and officially affiliated with the Newcastle District Golf Association. Throughout World War II, the club held fundraising events for various causes but was eventually impacted by the war, leading to a brief closure in 1948.

Redeveloped by golfer Keith Bedford

The course was redeveloped in the 1960s by professional golfer Keith Bedford and renamed Sugar Valley Golf Club. In 1972, renowned golf professional Col Johnston and his family took over the club, operating it for more than 30 years. Col’s sons, Peter and David, both golf professionals, also played key roles in maintaining and growing the club.
